No amount of branding or copywriting can help you

If your product is bad
If your service is "average"
If your customer experience sucks
If you're not delivering on your promises

When I pay a premium for a burger, I expect a tasty meal. Not a pretty menu and a fancy tagline. 🍔

"LinkedIn has changed"

LinkedIn is not a CV anymore.
LinkedIn is not a job site anymore.
LinkedIn is not an online contact book.

Exactly! It's a platform for new opportunities.

Stop complaining. And start "writing". It's "the new way" to land your next deal, sale or connection. ✌️

Mar 7, 2023

3 questions to ask before hitting Publish

1. Is this helpful to my audience?
2. Is what I've written clear or confusing?
3. Is this helping me grow my brand's authority?

Use this as a checklist whenever you write = you'll win 😇

P.S. This works with any piece of content

Ok, this has to be the best email ever! ❤️

"Dear professor Jasmin,

I tried to enrol in your Copywriting II subject but the system said there's a limit. Can I please still attend your lectures? I'd love to learn from you - even if I'm not enrolled?"

TLDR: I have more students enrolling in my subject than the university allows. But the students still want to attend - in their free time. Best feeling ever! 🙌

No copywriting tips today. This is the post.

Feb 25, 2023

I don't know who needs to hear this but...

You can delete 20% of text from your next email or LinkedIn post. It's probably too wordy.

Happy writing!

“Too much copy? Make it choppy!” 😊

How 1 post generated $1,750 in 24 hours (by accident)

Yesterday I did something "uncommon" 😇

I offered free LinkedIn advice to ANYONE in the comment section of my post. Yes, I'm responding to everyone.

So far, 662 comments (and counting)

+ Questions about LinkedIn strategy
+ Advice on LinkedIn community building
+ Recommendations for their LinkedIn growth

That post is a GOLDMINE (linked below)

- Now, this is all stuff I typically charge for
- But I made it my mission to "support others"
- Because I like it. I enjoy it. No strings attached.

As a result of "free value", I got 7 new bookings at $250 (50% off my usual hourly rate, as I'm booked for the year)

I'll say this again: "Share everything you know". It's amazing how much "giving away" actually "gives back". ❤️

Anyone can write. But not everyone's a copywriter.
Anyone can cook. But not everyone's a chef.
Anyone can do anything. But not as a pro.
Build a Carrd website > Web designer
Use ChatGPT > Write as a human
Use Canva > Graphic designer
Snap a photo > Photographer
Speaking > Public speaking
This list goes on and on...

Being a "pro" doesn't mean doing things others can't.

It means doing the same things - on a whole new level!

Congrats, pro! 👏

Copywriting tip: Never write to “everyone”

Writing content without an audience in mind is like writing a love letter and titling it:

To whom it may concern ❤️

Feb 6, 2023

Ever heard of "visual suffocation"?

It's when you have a super valuable piece of content.
A must-read LinkedIn post. But people don't read it.
If this sounds familiar, there's a good reason why:
Your content is not as "readable" as you think.
You don't pay attention to the word count.
Not enough attention to the structure.
Not formatting copy for readability.
Using too many words. Big words.
Using too little white space.
And as a result, you get:
Not many impressions.
Poor engagement.
Disappointment.

📌 Your content needs to "breathe".

Improve breathability = improve readability

Feb 2, 2023

My "secret" LinkedIn formatting hack:

Post doesn't fit on your phone's screen? It’s too long.
Have to swipe down to reach the end? It's too long.
Have to make it longer than that? Post a carousel.

Easy to read = easy to consume 😊

Just a reminder to everyone that the best way to build authority for your brand is to:

Be kind.
Be helpful.
Be supportive.

People 1st. Everything else falls into place.

Jan 16, 2023

Two of the hardest words I've ever written:

"Better Together" for Digicel Group

Took weeks! Months of attempts.

For something so simple...

But it was the perfect tagline.

For their 13M customers, it was perfect.

Because "good copy doesn't feel like copy".

Good copy makes you "feel". Heard. Appreciated.

Writing words is easy. But creating emotion is the goal.

Jan 13, 2023

Do this → watch your writing transform

Take the last line of every post → Write it first

Reason? We often leave the "power" statement last.

By leading vs. ending with it, everything changes.

Your hook + entire post become more powerful.

Want to 10x every post? Do this → You'll win.

P.S. I swapped the 1st and last line here.

Jan 11, 2023

Writing to everyone = builds following

Writing to a small group = builds a niche

Writing on a specific topic = builds authority

Writing to solve a specific problem = builds clientele

What is your reason for writing? 😇

Jan 9, 2023

The first goal of writing: Grab attention

The ultimate goal of writing: Be helpful

It’s sad how many forget the end goal…❤️

1-minute copywriting course:

If it feels like writing, rewrite it.
If it doesn't sound natural, rewrite it.
If it sounds like you're selling, rewrite it.
If it doesn't spark any emotion, rewrite it.
If it sounds too long, it probably is too long.
If it isn't very specific, it's probably very vague.
If it's written for everyone, it's meant for no one.

Congrats! You're a copywriter now. 🏆

Writing good LinkedIn content isn't enough anymore.

There is so much "good" content already out there.
You have to "stand out from the pack" somehow.
You have to do things that others aren't doing.

"But my posts are valuable" Good! However...

90% of readers nowadays "skim" posts.
Unless you write posts so "uniquely”…
You make it impossible to look away.

Solution? Formatting! Here's how:

Are you a vitamin or a painkiller?

Most brands choose wrong.

🟢 People follow you for months...
❌ Yet they don't know WHAT you do.

🟢 People know what you do...
❌ Yet they don't know how GOOD you are.

🟢 People know you're good...
❌ But they know of others who SAY they're better.

Ask yourself this...

Are you a "nice-to-have"?

Or a "must-have" for your audience?

My super secret copywriting hack 📌

Every time I write anything, I simply start with:

"Dear son,"

and end with:

"Love, Dad"

After I'm done, I just delete those two parts.

+ When you write to only 1 person, it's easier.

+ When you write to your fave person, it's faster.

+ Good for LinkedIn posts, emails, or anything really...

P.S. Who's the "one person" you write to? 😊

Dec 13, 2022

Write daily = write better daily
Write daily = write faster over time
Write daily = build the habit of writing
Write daily = improve spoken conversation
Write daily = understand human emotion better
Write daily = improve your content creation process
Write daily = become a better communicator as a whole

Writing daily unlocks so many "powers" in your daily life 😊

Want your business to succeed? Remember:

❌ B2B ❌ B2C ❌ B2G ❌ ABCDEFG

✅ P2P - People to People

Dec 9, 2022

If you want to get better at writing... write daily. 👌

 1. Try writing with + without inspiration
 2. Try writing with + without any direction
 3. Try writing hooks only - without the body
 4. Try writing the body only without the hooks
 5. Try writing on a time limit e.g. 2 minutes only
 6. Try writing "like other creators" as a challenge
 7. Try rewriting (improving) other people's content
 8. Try writing on a topic you've never covered before
 9. Try writing to one person only vs. an entire audience
10. Try recording yourself talk - then, rewrite your speech

Copywriting isn't a skill you "learn". You "practice" it. 😃

Dec 2, 2022

Being a copywriter isn't luxurious. 😬

You have to do so much more than "just write". To be a successful copywriter, you have to understand:

+ marketing
+ graphic design
+ brand psychology
+ consumer psychology
+ wireframing and mockups
+ market research and positioning
+ elements of UX, UI, and web design
+ trends across 5+ different social platforms
+ all communication mediums (non-digital too)
+ writing to inform, entertain, persuade, humor…

It's so much more than "just writing".

Copywriting isn't a luxurious job by any chance.

But copywriters... they are a luxury. 😊

Dec 1, 2022

My biggest challenge ever as a copywriter ⚡️

A client wanted to say they were: "The best-tasting chocolate chip for vegans"

The challenge? I couldn't include these words:

❌ Best-tasting ❌ chocolate ❌ chip ❌ vegans

3 weeks and 300 chocolate chips later, we approved:

✅ "So Tasty, You Forget They're Vegan"
✅ "All Natural. All Sweet. All Good."
✅ "Vegan Recipe. Regal Taste."

The billboard campaign was an absolute success. 👏

And yes, I randomly ate a Duplo chocolate for dramatic effect. When in Germany, you know... 😎

Nov 28, 2022

Get specific = get better at writing 😊

Be it statistics, exact details, or case studies.

Specificity in your writing "hooks" the reader in.

❌ How to write better emails
✅ How to write emails with a 92% open rate

❌ Get it done in no time!
✅ Ready in 10 seconds or less!

❌ Need more post ideas for LinkedIn?
✅ Create 50 LinkedIn posts in 5 minutes

Being vague doesn’t work in real life.

And it doesn’t work in copywriting.

Specificity sells. Use it. 😊

5 lessons I learned as a Fortune 500 copywriter:

❌ You need to be the best writer in the room!
✅ You need to be the best "idea generator"

❌ The boldest, most out-of-the-box copy wins!
✅ The "clearest" copy wins → Clear, not clever

❌ You need to come up with the final copy asap!
✅ "Clear" and "simple" copy usually takes months

❌ Every great idea you have will get published!
✅ 99% of your copy will serve as "inspiration only"

❌ Deliver "my final copy recommendations”
✅ Pitch "my thought process behind this copy"

Any of these sound surprising to you?

P.S. What is your biggest lesson as a copywriter?

Nov 24, 2022

❌ Long copy

❌ Short copy

❌ Boring copy

❌ Interesting copy

❌ Non-formatted copy

❌ Super-formatted copy

✅ Copy that solves a problem

✅ Copy that others can relate with

✅ Copy that is "felt", and not just read

Focus = intent = value = followers = paying clients

Nov 23, 2022

I may have written copy for some big brands but...

I still sign off every email with "Best," 😊

Personal. Business. Or newsletters.

Nov 22, 2022

2016: $8 per hour

2022: 4 figures per day

You don't charge rates.

You charge yourself.

+ All of your hard work

+ Years of doing it wrong

+ Years of learning it right

+ All the times you've failed

+ All the times you succeeded

+ Every single client you've helped

+ All of your knowledge and expertise

Your rates are not numbers.

Your rates are YOU.

Remember that 😊

P.S. Hello from Germany where I'm hosting a full-day brand messaging workshop in-house for a client.

Wie geht's?

Nov 20, 2022

"You'll never make it big. Your copywriting sounds basic."

"You'll never earn 6 figures as a non-native speaker."

"You'll never be a good dad. You work too much."

"Stick to startups. Leave the big clients to us."

"Stick to writing. Strategy is not your sport."

"Stick to the Balkans. You belong there."

"Faker. Wannabe influencer. Bosnian."

I used to pay attention to "the noise". Until I didn't.

Instead, I focused on "making noise". And I did.

Not everyone wants to see you succeed.
Not everyone wants to see you happy.
Not everyone wants to see you win.

Don't take it personally.

It's them. Not you.

I was wrong 🤚

I've always said branding was:

❌ What others think about your brand
❌ How they feel about your products

But in reality, branding is:

✅ What you help them achieve
✅ How you make them feel

And that... is a big difference.

✅ "Enablement" and "emotions"
❌ "Solutions" and "features"

A good brand knows the difference.

P.S. What's your definition of "branding"?

Confession 😊

- I had never written a website...
+ When I accepted my first website copywriting job.

- I had never written a radio ad...
+ When I had to write my first radio script copy.

- I had never opened Google Ads...
+ When I took a full-time PPC copywriting job.

"I did things when I wasn't ready" 🔑

✅ But I put in 110% into it all.
✅ I did 110% more than most.
✅ I dared. I tried. I succeeded.

They say the only way to get better at something is to start doing it, and then get better at doing it.

"Work harder! Start before you're ready!"

It's so true! 110% true! 📌

P.S. I'm not advocating for you to become a fireman without ever taking your shirt off in public. Just... don't stay stuck in your comfort zone. Try new things. Upskill. You'll win.

How I became a copywriter

I was a rapper for 5 years.

Wrote every one of my songs.

Did my own PR and media outreach.

Did my own marketing and social media.

First day on Upwork…

What do I choose as my "job"?

I see the word "copywriting".

No idea what it means.

I google it.

It's aaaall the stuff I'd been doing for years!

From rapper to copywriter.

That's my story! 🎉

P.S. In 2014, I was on X-Factor! By 2015, I quit music.

"Copy is not written. Copy is assembled."

Week 3 as a Copywriting Professor saw some interesting conversations with my students. 10/10 must attend!

+ We focused on the process of writing copy.
+ The research. Drafting. Editing. Then, the writing.
+ Draft. Edit. Edit. Edit. Draft. Edit. Edit. Write. Done.

"Writing copy is a process, not an action."

- It doesn't happen all at once.
- There's a lot of research involved.
- There's a lot of editing and revising involved.
- What you write first is never what you write last.
- You're creating building blocks for your "final copy".

Huge lesson in there.

Why learn copywriting?

+ Everyone writes
+ Every brand needs a voice
+ Every product needs a good story
+ Everything starts + ends with communication
+ Every person needs to be a better communicator

Copywriting helps you:

+ Write better
+ Give voices to brands
+ Share stories that resonate
+ Communicate ideas that create action
+ Get better at communication as a whole

It's a key skill for anyone.

But it's not for everyone. 😊

P.S. 12 years ago, I googled the word "copywriting". Researched it. Tried it. Still researching and trying.

"Your goal isn't to write creatively. It's to sell creatively."

This was the summary of my second copywriting class at Burch University.

👉 For a copywriter, the goal is to "sell".
👉 To help businesses make money.
👉 To convert visitors into buyers.

The "sale" element is what makes copywriting vastly different from creative writing. It proposes a creative challenge.

🥊 The "selling challenge" vs. the "artistic challenge"

If your goal is to get reactions like:

"Oh my God, that is such a cool ad!"
"Oh wow, that looks beautiful."
"Damn, that was funny!"

vs.

"Damn, I need that right now!"
"Where can I find this?"
"Where do I sign up?"

✅ Your copy, ultimately, will fail - without a sale.

"Often, people remember a funny ad but they don’t remember the product." — Richard Kirshenbaum

Hope you learned something today! ✌️

P.S. I'll share my professor-ial journey with you week by week. Follow along. Learn copywriting with us. You'll win.

Love is a dangerous thing for brands.

Yeah, love.

Ever been in love?

Go back to that moment you actually "fell" in love. Something changed that day. You started to... trust.

❤️ You no longer felt confused.
❤️ You felt seen, heard, understood.
❤️ You felt like you mattered to someone.
❤️ You actually looked forward to seeing them.

Ever heard of "love brands"?

✅ Love brands are what every brand aspires to be.
✅ They have the ultimate trust of their audience.
✅ They're not working 24/7 to gain their trust.
✅ Their audience "loves" + wants them.

But love's gotta start somewhere.

📌 For brands, it starts with copy.
📌 Your brand messaging.
📌 Winning their hearts.

Your brand messaging goals?

👉 Make them feel heard/understood
👉 Make it clear it's about them, not you
👉 Don't confuse them with your messaging

Otherwise...

❌ You confuse them = you lose them
❌ Lose their attention = lose their interest
❌ Make them think = make them think about others

Love can be a dangerous thing. Words too.

Just try and remember that.

#Copywriting #BrandMessaging

P.S. The human brain is the same. It works 24/7, 365 days from the moment you're born until... it falls in love. 😊

Oct 28, 2022

Just a friendly reminder that no copywriter in the world can help you if your product is bad. As simple as that.

Good copy "amplifies" a good product.
Good copy "falsifies" a bad product.

We're writers. Not magicians.

Thank you. Bye.

Oct 29, 2022

The beauty of personal branding today is:

- you don't need to have 10+ success stories
- you don't need to be super experienced
- you don't need to know everything

What people relate to is "the person".

+ share your learnings along the way
+ share your failures and lessons
+ share what(ever) you know

You don't build a brand on being successful. You build it to become successful. 😊

I was taking a walk by the river. WhatsApp notification!

Client: Hey Jay, can you have a look at something? Do you see any way we can make this better?

I sat down on a bench. Looked at it for 5 minutes. Typed up some copy options for them to consider.

Client: This is gold! Thank you so much!

Crickets for 5 minutes... Email notification!

"You just received a $500 payment."

Dear freelancers, dream clients do exist. 👏

Oct 22, 2022

How do you know if your website copy is effective?

❌ I'll tell you how you can tell if it's NOT effective.

👉 You've invested 100+ hours into that new website
👉 You've rewritten everything at least 5 times
👉 You understand your business 100%
👉 When you read it, it feels clear

But people still ask you: "So what do you do?"

— Aaaand there it goes.
— Down the drain...
— All 100+ hours.

✅ So how do you avoid people asking you this question?

👉 Invest time in "understanding the customer" instead
👉 Got 10+ features? Ok, cool. But which one is "the" one?
👉 Can your customer understand you in 10 seconds or less?
👉 Write for them. Not you. You don't matter. They do.

Trust me. These "little" things make "all" the difference.

+ They'll visit your website.
+ They'll see what you're all about.
+ They'll write you an offer, inquiry, whatever.

Plus, you get to never answer "that" question again.

You're welcome. ✌️

P.S. Here's my general rule for website copywriting: What "you" understand doesn't matter. All that matters is what you allow "your website visitors" to understand. Nothing else.

Writing copy without an audience in mind is like writing a love letter and addressing it: To Whom It May Concern. ❤️

Oct 20, 2022

3 copywriting facts to think about:

🟢 "Most copywriters have very little formal training"
🟢 "Writing takes the least time. Research though? Pft!"
🟢 "Copywriters don't befriend anyone who likes onions."

(Okay, maybe that last one is just me)

P.S. I'm writing this because I often see job ads requiring a degree or certification in copywriting. Seriously, no. Just no.

Oct 24, 2022

🎊 Your boy's a Copywriting Professor! 🎊

As of today, I'm teaching Copywriting at the International Burch University. It's a course I created from scratch.

It's no secret I left the education space to start my creative journey. It's been 6 years since my last lecture. I missed it.

Sharing value is in my blood. Instilling knowledge. Seeing others get better. I always want to share. I enjoy being a guide. I enjoy inspiring. It's where I shine. 🎉

Oct 23, 2022

The best thing I've ever done as a copywriter: LISTEN. 👂

Listen to clients → what do they need?
Listen to feedback → what could be better?
Listen to the market → what is popping right now?
Listen to the reaction → what is performing right now?
Listen to my competitors → what are others focused on?
Listen to my inner impostor → what can/must I get better at?
Listen to... myself. Every day. → what do I think? Me. The pro.

Copywriting is listening. Empathy. Research. Figuring it out.

And sometimes, only sometimes...

It's writing. ✍️

P.S. I wasn't always a good listener. Got better over the years. I thought I had to "know what to do" on the very 1st call. No. All you have to do at first is listen. Just... listen. You'll win.

Oct 14, 2022

"Dude, you're from Bosnia. You'll never be the same as us!"

7 years ago, a copywriter I looked up to said this to me. They didn't mean to offend me. They were just quoting "facts".

🟢 For context:

- I am not a native English speaker
- My name is a female name in most countries
- I'm from Bosnia, so that means limited opportunities
- I'm not from the US, so that means charging lower rates

🟢 The reality:

+ I taught English to 1,000+ students
+ Everyone calls me Jay anyway; like the letter "J"
+ My accent and my skills are definitely not non-native
+ I have a higher price tag than most US copywriters I know

🟢 The truth:

• Was it "easy" at any point? No.
• Did I fail and learn along the way? Yes.
• Did I have to re-position myself 10+ times? Yeah.
• Did I have to work 5 times as hard as "them"? Probably.

But here's the REAL truth: So did "they".

That quote at the beginning?

🔴 It's just SOOO WRONG!

Your native language doesn't matter if you speak English well.
Your location doesn't matter if you deliver outstanding work.
Your price tag doesn't have a limit just because you're not born in X country or have an "easy-to-pronounce" name.

There's room for all of us.

🟢 Remember this:

EVERYONE has to go through their own journey of growth.
EVERYONE has the opportunity to succeed globally.
EVERYONE has to figure it out for themselves.
EVERYONE needs time to figure it out.
EVERYONE "can" figure it out.

Heck, I'm still figuring it out.

+ But I've grown.
+ And come so far.
+ Sooooo frickin' far!

And that's "facts".

I thank that person for telling me that to my face. It just made me appreciate who I am and where I am today 1000x more. ✌️

Does your brand have personality?

👉 Here's an easy way to figure out:

- if your brand has a personality (a tone of voice)
- what kind of personality your brand ‘should’ have
- what copywriting style suits your brand's personality

👉 Simply pick a movie or TV show character.

Corporate → Walter White (Breaking Bad)
Deep. Analytical. Just the right amount of intriguing.

SaaS → Donna Paulsen (Suits):
Quick-witted. Sassy remarks. Smart as hell.

Women's Health → Daenerys Targaryen (GoT)
Strong. Persistent. Inquisitive. Mysterious.

Men's Health → Don Draper (Mad Men)
Confident. Direct. Motivational but realistic.

Marketing → Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory)
Intelligent. Tough and decisive. Super funny at times.

These are just a few examples but you get the picture.

Regardless of your niche / industry, you should:

👉 Pick a communication style that reflects your brand
👉 Make sure all of your copywriting reflects that style
👉 Show off your brand's personality. Be memorable.

Who's your favorite TV character?

- - - - -

P.S. My on-screen hero is Harvey Spector (Suits)

To anyone dealing with rejection, being ghosted by recruiters, not earning $$$, or just experiencing a low moment in life...

❌ Don't force it.

Focus on the things you "can" do in the meantime.
Do what you can. With what you can. For the time being.
Complete a course. Build a brand on LinkedIn. Learn. Rest.

✅ Every low is a chance to grow.

Use your downtime to upskill.
It’s not about forcing happiness.
It's about not letting the sadness win. 🙌

P.S. I used to clean streets and toilets to fund my college. But I wrote articles "on the side". The lows eventually ended + I got out with a full-blown portfolio ready to take on the world.

Big news! 😊

I just found out my copy has crossed $10M in revenue generated for clients (at least, the stuff I could count). 🎉

See, over the years, I made it my mission to track how much revenue I can generate for others. Every word, ad, blog etc.

The reality is: it's even more than $10M. I don't have all the insights for every single client, for obvious reasons.

What matters the most to me is: I did this.

Countless hours. Just typing away at my keyboard.
Word by word. Idea by idea. Strategy by strategy.
Giving every brand what they need. And then some!

This is my moment and I’m proud of it! 🙌

How do you position yourself as an expert?

Niche down + focus on quality.

You might get:

❌ fewer likes
❌ less engagement
❌ slower profile growth

But you will (definitely) get:

✅ more “true” followers
✅ better positioning in the market
✅ an increase in bookings / inquiries

"Choose that one thing first. And do that one thing right. Everything else after that will fall into place."

Quality first. Virality, followers… it’ll come.

Oct 18, 2022

I quoted $10,000 to rewrite their website. They said $5,000.

I respectfully declined. So did they.
I gave them 1 piece of advice. Free of charge.
I also offered to stay on the line if they needed a consultation.

🔴 Guess what happened 2 months after?

They tried doing it with 2 other folks. At $5,000. At $7,500.
Both of them failed to "understand" the brand.
They tried doing things their own way.

🟡 So why come back to me after wasting $12,500?

"You were the only one who actually listened."
"Your free advice was better than their paid advice."
"We felt understood. We want our buyers to feel the same."

🟢 Sometimes the best thing you can do as a copywriter is:

Listen → Detach from everything you know
Pay attention → What does the brand "really" need
Invest yourself in it → Put yourself in the customers' shoes

🟢 Sometimes the best thing you can do as a brand is:

Listen → good copywriters "ask lots of questions"
Pay attention → good copy can make or break a brand
Invest yourself in it → don't cheap out on good copywriting

After all...

Copywriting isn't about brands.
It's about audiences. Your ideal buyers.
Even if it costs $12,500 for them to "hear" you.

Or just 1 free piece of advice.

You choose. 😊

P.S. I aim to offer free advice to anyone I can. Even if I know we won't be working together, the least I can do is help you leave with something useful. Pay it forward → You'll win.

Oct 12, 2022

Every time you write, you sell.

Whether you’re a copywriter or not.

✅ Your words describe
✅ Your words connect
✅ Your words convert
✅ Your words inspire
✅ Your words… sell

Write better = sell better

It's the ultimate skill. In any job.

P.S. I didn't know what the word "copywriting" even meant 10 years ago. I Googled it and thought "yeah, I could do this". 😆

Oct 17, 2022

Every writer I know is scared. Including me.

It happens right before you start.

👉 “What if nobody reads it?”
👉 “What if nobody likes it?”
👉 “What do I even write?”

When writing, just imagine you’re writing to 1 person only. Not an entire audience. Audiences are scary.

Oct 13, 2022

It’s not about you.

It’s about your audience.

Always. Whatever job you do.

Make them feel cared for. You’ll win.

Pro copywriters like to throw punches. 💥🥊

Here's what I mean:

👉 When "explainer" language doesn't work...
↳ Switch to “everyday” and “punchy” language.

Examples (for an email cleaner app):

“1-2-3. Inbox clean!”
“Clean your inbox in minutes!”
“10,000 unopened emails? Hold my beer!”

👉 When writing, you should be TALKING.

Imagine you’re actually having a conversation.
Prompt the other person to respond.
Give them an “a-ha!” moment.

👉 Stop focusing on sounding too "creative".

Just write the first thing that pops into your mind.
Literally, like having a conversation with someone.
Then, edit and refine to make it sound memorable.

This is how your copy will 100% pack a punch. 💥🥊

Oct 4, 2022

Sneaky copywriting tip to build brand authority 😏

Ask questions + answer them immediately

👉 So, we ask and answer ourselves? Yep, exactly so.
👉 How so? Because it creates a conversational flow.
👉 Meaning? The reader's mind doesn't wander off.

(See what I just did there?)

This is how you draw more attention to where you need it.

👉 Keep your audience more engaged and invested.
👉 Make them feel like they're 'talking to you'.
👉 Don't keep them thinking or guessing.

Don't believe me? Try it out for yourself. 😊

P.S. This doesn't (always) work with rhetorical questions.

Sep 17, 2022

I got my last 10 clients via referrals.

100% word-of-mouth.

So can you.

Here’s how to turn word-of-mouth into a strategy:

👉 Provide a heck of a service
↳ What the client needs + asked for

👉 Always give a little extra (unpaid)
↳ What the client needs + didn't ask for

👉 Invest a lot of time into LinkedIn
↳ Showcase your expertise + stay top of mind

"In sales, a referral is the key to the door of resistance."

The more people know about who you are, what you do and for whom, the more likely it is that they’ll "remember you".

🌱 Always be planting your seeds and watering them.

Sep 19, 2022

❌ I don’t have a blog.
❌ I don’t have a newsletter.
❌ I don’t have a digital product.

✅ I have a steady flow of leads.
✅ I create content every day.
✅ I sell and earn every day.

You define your own success.

Everyone’s journey is different.

Don’t let them tell you otherwise.

Oct 7, 2022

This morning, I literally walked away from a $100k job. 💰

👇 Here’s what happened.

We got a project inquiry on the Vincordis Media website.
Based on early lead qualification, the client was a good fit.
The project was also something we could handle - in full.

But...

On the very 1st call, the vibe wasn't right.
They were evasive, even about some simple details.
I'd ask very specific questions; they'd answer only half of it.

I said "no".

I knew this cagey behavior and disrespect were setting the tone for the entire project. For our entire "relationship".

👉 Respectfully, I respect myself. And my team.
👉 More so than I respect any 6-figure offer. Or more.
👉 I'm 100% certain we'll make this money soon either way.

So...

Saying "no" to things that don't feel right?
↳ I'll always say "yes" to that.

Want to write better? Edit better.

👇 My golden rule:

First, write more. Then, write less.

Your first draft isn’t the final copy you send in.
Your first draft is just that… a DRAFT.
Your second and third draft too!

👉 Take your time before you start editing.

Make sure to write as MUCH as possible first.
All your short notes, crazy thoughts, whatever…
Then, refine. Cut it down. Get rid of the fluff.

Re-read.

Re-write.

Re-think.

READY! 👌

Even the biggest brands in the world mess up.

When Mercedes launched the 'Nature of Nothing' campaign to promote its greenwashing efforts, people were furious.

Greenwashing = being environmentally friendly

The campaign?

Super creative. Leaves you thinking.

The problem?

Mercedes - as a top global polluter - is the reason we need things like greenwashing in the first place.

The campaign was a hit. But not in the way they imagined.

9 out of 10 reactions were negative. People immediately called them out on it.

"You're not fixing the problem."

“You are the problem."

Mercedes issued many apologies. Publicly.

Market research. Test groups. Idea validation. Idea validation.

So many things need to happen before any ad campaign gets the "green" light, especially in the "big brands" world.

Sep 28, 2022

The best way to position your brand? 👌

Care.

Don't sell the product. Sell the problem fix.
Don't sell the feature. Sell the experience.
Don't sell the story. Sell the emotion.

See the connection?

When people feel understood, they feel valued.
When they feel valued, they stay. For good.
In this case, they buy from you. For good.

Care.

The best way to position your brand. 👌

Oct 3, 2022

Want more personality in your copy?

👉 Chop up your sentences.

Best. Thing. Ever.
But... What about... Food???
Onions. Give me everything but onions.

Notice how all the sentences above sound... human?

👉 It's the way we talk.

We chop sentences up when we want to add emphasis to the things we're saying. And we do so naturally.

Even if the sentences end up starting with "And", "Because", "But", and "Which", which may not be grammatically correct.

👉 Chop it up. You'll spice it up.

"If you think good copywriters are expensive, you should see the cost of bad ones." - Actual words by a #copywriter

(One who took too damn long to realize what he's worth)

Aug 24, 2022

It's 36°C outside. ☀️ It's also been 36 hours since I wrote a post related to #copywriting. So, here are my 36 tips on how to become a better #copywriter. No, really. 36. In 1 place.

👉 Find out what kind of copywriter you want to be
↳ Niche down. Find your strengths (and weaknesses).

👉 Always start with 'why'
↳ Is it to educate? Drive sales? Drive in-person visits?

👉 When you're done, ask 'why' again

👉 You're writing for 'a specific audience' → not yourself
↳ It's always about what the audience 'wants', not you

👉 You're writing to 'that' audience → not the client

👉 Show, don't tell → use real-life pain points as the buy-in
↳ Don't just jump into a solution → lead in with the problem

👉 Keep it clear
↳ Copy that is 'too creative' can easily become 'too risky'

👉 Write words that 'actual' people say in real life
↳ Jargon is also okay if the audience 'actually' uses it

👉 Avoid using passive voice - if you can

👉 Avoid 'very' words - if you can
↳ Very good = incredible; very interesting = fascinating

👉 Avoid 'vague' words for the life of you → Synergy = 🤢🤮

👉 It's okaaay to use contractions (I'll fight you for this)
↳ We are = we're

👉 Shorter is always better. It's 2022.

👉 Improvise with punctuation
↳ Example: Best. Email Plugin. Ever.

👉 Find great copy → Then, rewrite it as your own
↳ Homepages, ads, LinkedIn posts...

👉 Read your copy aloud to yourself → Does it sound "ok"?

👉 Don't expect briefs to include everything
↳ Ask questions. Tons of questions.

👉 Don't expect clients to know everything
↳ Guide them. Ideate with them. Figure it out together.

👉 Always write with the 'brand voice' in mind, not your own

👉 Document your process with every project → Repeat
↳ This helps you create a 'turn key' workflow for everything

👉 Emulate other copywriters' workflows

👉 Read books by "the greats"

👉 Work on your speed → deliver ahead of time vs. on time
↳ Chances are you'll always work on multiple copy projects

👉 Set realistic expectations. 'Be real' about what you can do.
↳ Don't oversell yourself just to make yourself look good

👉 Underpromise but 'hint' at what you can deliver
↳ Always pitch 1-2 'really good' ideas before final delivery

👉 Don't just deliver → 'present' your copy
↳ Explaining to the client 'how you got there' really helps

👉 Don't make spelling or grammar mistakes

👉 Make research your no. 1 job
↳ The best copy is 90% research, 5% writing, 5% editing

👉 Make editing your best friend
↳ Your final draft is just that. A draft.

👉 Edit, and edit again
↳ Fine-tune to perfection

👉 Make competitor copy work for you
↳ Get inspired by what others are + AREN'T doing

👉 Writer's block? Create some sort of structure on a page
↳ Structure helps you understand "where to start"

👉 Use writing templates that are proven to work

👉 Learn about sales psychology every chance you get

👉 Talk about money upfront. Know your price. Stick to it.

👉 Lastly, enjoy your work!

Aug 15, 2022

Struggling to write? Writer’s block? Blank page syndrome?

👇 Here’s a technique I use to avoid “shooting blanks”.

🟢 I always create a structure on an empty page.

For ads, I use Headline + Subheadline + CTA.
For emails, I use Intro + Offer + Info + Why + CTA.
For websites, I create an ABC breakdown of each page.

So on and so forth...

👉 Structure on a blank page helps.
👉 It directs you to fill in the blanks.
👉 Far better than one giant blank.

So if you ever catch yourself looking at an empty canvas for minutes, try having a structure in place. It helps. 👌

"If no one hates your brand, no one really loves it."

10 years ago, I read this quote and I found it so polarizing, nonsensical, weird... I didn't understand what it meant.

👉 Like, why can't it be that "no one hates a brand"?
↳ WHY can't "everyone" just love it? It's possible.

10 years later, I can tell you this:

👉 This quote isn't about love vs. hate.
↳ It isn't about the WHY either.
↳ It's about WHO your brand is for.

Your brand, service or the value you provide simply ISN'T and CANNOT be for everyone. There is no one-size-fits-all brand.

A hairdresser won't find value in a socket wrench.

Nor will a mechanic find value in a hair curler.

(Or me in anything with onions) But the point is...

👉 Your brand MUST HAVE a defined audience. A target customer. A market. Then, provide value to that market.

What this quote really means is:

The people in YOUR market are supposed to love your product because it is good for THEM. Because it solves a problem for THEM. Because THEY find value in it.

👉 So it is OKAY for someone to HATE your brand. It doesn't mean your brand sucks - it simply isn't made for them.

Do you agree?

Aug 27, 2022

How often do you celebrate? Is it just for the big stuff?

I was recently reminded to "celebrate more". 🙏
(best advice ever, by the way)

❌ Not just the big fat new clients
❌ Not just the new business launch
❌ Not just the engagement or wedding

Celebrate every little thing too. Like, really...

✅ The project or task you just completed
✅ The lead who just booked a 1:1 call
✅ Meeting new people on LinkedIn

Take time (even just 1 minute) to "appreciate everything".

This doesn't cost you anything.

It doesn't spiral into "false motivation".

It actually makes you appreciate everything you do more.

👉 You don't have to wait for the "big stuff" to happen.

👉 You can celebrate more. Every day, if needed.

👉 And don't let anyone tell you differently.

- - - - -

👇 What are some "small" things you did this week that deserve a celebration this Friday (or the weekend)?

What is the best #advice I received in the last 10 years? 👌

"Do things you're not experienced at. You'll get better." 👏

Aug 18, 2022

Real talk. My opinion on #copywriting as a full-time job.

I think no one in their right mind would ever "choose" it. 😳

👉 It's unpredictable.
👉 It's high-stress.
👉 It's ungrateful.

Honestly, it's one of the "toughest" jobs in the world.

👉 There's a new challenge every single day.
↳ New topic. New industry. New market research.

👉 The stress of "always being creative" is too much.
↳ You can't always think of "the" new idea. You just can't.

👉 Creativity is often stifled by risk. Simple always wins.
↳ Cool idea? Sorry—no can do. Gotta "be clear and simple".

Still, if you're someone who loves unpredictability, the adrenaline of creating that next big idea, and being ready to have that same idea get shut down - this job is for you.

You're welcome.

"90% of brands miss out on their ideal customers not because of poor strategy but poor brand messaging"

👇 The key to finding the right messaging for your brand?

Stop thinking like a brand owner → Think like a customer

Take a step back → See what your customers see

Then, write → Sounds better?

👉 If you're not "the writer type", there's an easy fix.
↳ Hire a copywriter. I may know 1 or 2 good ones. (wink)

Write stories like your grandmother used to tell them.

Brand messaging isn't a task you complete.

It's "the" main pillar of your brand strategy.

As soon as you figure out:

👉 Who you are → for your ideal customers

👉 What you offer → to your ideal customers

👉 How to communicate → with your ideal customers

That's when you can "worry worry-free" about strategy.

Not before. Or anytime else.
It starts with your messaging. Always.

Aug 11, 2022

Growing your business? Here's my "secret sauce" to a great client experience every single time.

🚨 Warning: actual quotes of mine used ahead

- - - - -

1️⃣ Always do (a little bit of) extra work for free
↳ This doesn't mean HOURS of unpaid work.
↳ It means giving ADVICE. At the very end.

👉 "Hey, one more thing... You can consider this free advice. In the [X] section of your website, you could try doing [X]"

✅ Reason: Consultations cost a lot. You're giving them your expert advice as a sign of "I appreciate you as a client".

- - - - -

2️⃣ Ask (loads of) questions - especially in the start
↳ This doesn't mean you DON'T know what you're doing.
↳ It means you ACTUALLY understand the process.

👉 As a copywriter, I ask about the customer mindset. History. UX journey. Conversion goals. The offer. The limitations.

✅ Reason: Asking questions leads to better understanding and managing expectations on both ends. Plus, it often reveals new things the client didn't think of by themselves.

- - - - -

3️⃣ Don't expect a "glowing" testimonial - ask for it
↳ This doesn't mean BEGGING for a testimonial.
↳ It means you should ALWAYS ask for one. A long one.

👉 "Hey, I'd sooo appreciate it if you could write an honest testimonial about our time working together. If possible, more than 1-2 sentences. That would mean A LOT! Thank you."

✅ Most clients think a thank you in a DM/email is enough. Simply remind them. And make sure the actual experience was good. I wouldn't ask for one if I messed up the job. lol

- - - - -

Hope you found these tips helpful!

If you'd like, I can make this a series! Let's call this Part 1?

Let me know. 😊

Did you know there are 30+ forms of #copywriting?

👇 I rarely thought about this until recently.

I'm hosting a copywriting class today → one of the requested topics was "Where can we see copy in the real world?"

So, here's that list:

↳ Brand identity decks
↳ Brand voice decks

↳ Email
↳ SMS
↳ Push notifications
↳ Packaging
+ more

🔴 Advertising & Marketing
↳ Billboards
↳ Video scripts
↳ Radio scripts
↳ Digital ads
↳ Google Ads
↳ Facebook Ads

↳ Infographics
+ more

🟠 Technical
↳ How-to's and guides
↳ Internal training documents
↳ Terms and conditions
↳ Legal pages
+ more

🟣 Fun
↳ Memes

These are all forms of copy you can see everyday.

The great thing about it is:

✅ You can position yourself as an expert in any (or many) of these if you're looking to do copywriting for a living.

✅ Each and every one of these requires a different approach and, in my experience, skillset. "Niches" exist for a reason.

✅ Most of these require you to upskill → learn more about branding, marketing, sales, product launches etc.

In a nutshell...

Copywriting is a great job.

It's even better if you know how to do "a lot". 💰

Want to write better ads, emails or Linkedin posts?

(Even if you’re not a #copywriter)

👇 Here are my top 3 tips to improve your writing:

- - - - -

1️⃣ Don’t over-focus on sounding “smart”

Sure, KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) is the norm.

But it isn’t always a rule you can apply.

First, write what you WANT to say.

Regardless of HOW it sounds like.

Then, focus on how you NEED to say it.

Fine-tune until you get to that “sweet spot”.

Battle your surge of “creativity”. Remember…

👉 Clarity is the goal.

✅ Here's 2 types of ad copy for a "lemon juice" product:

"Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy" = creative, but too risky
"Proper Lemon Juice In a Can" = simple, clear, attractive

(The 2nd one converted better for 87% of customers)

- - - - -

2️⃣ Test “everyday” and “punchy” language

When writing, you should be TALKING.

Imagine you’re actually having a conversation.

Prompt the other person to respond.

Make it about them. Spark their curiosity.

Tell them you CAN (and HOW to) help them.

Give them an “a-ha!” moment.

👉 You wanna make sure to leave an impression.

✅ Here's 3 examples for a "Gmail cleaner" add-on:

“Clean your inbox in minutes!”
“De-clutter your email in 1-2-3 (it's free)”
“Too many unopened emails? Hold my beer!”

(All 3 sound like everyday phrases. It's why they work.)

P.S. “Punchy” language doesn’t work for every brand.

- - - - -

3️⃣ First, write more. Then, write less.

I've followed this rule for 10 years now.

"Make sure to write as much as possible FIRST."

All your short notes, crazy thoughts, whatever…

Then, cut it down to what it needs to be.
Then, get rid of the fluff. The filler text. Blah!
Then, turn those 'clear' thoughts into copy. Bam!

✅ Take your time. Always. And here's why:

Your first draft isn’t the final copy you send in.
Your first draft is just that… a DRAFT.
Your second and third draft too!

👉 Re-read. Re-write. Re-think. READY!

The greatest love story in marketing?

❤️ Copywriters + graphic designers ❤️

When those 2 work together, amazing things happen.

Aug 12, 2022

How do you write "word-perfect" copy every single time?

👉 Write more first, then write less.
↳ Doesn't matter if it's an email, website or a Linkedin post.

👉 Write excessively. Edit obsessively.
↳ Your editing is where your writing (actually) happens.

👉 Make your writing "visually" appealing.
↳ Too long vs. too short. "Lemme read this" vs. "Hell no".

"Life shrinks and expands in proportion to one's courage."

If you ask me, so does your writing.

Your writing is only as good as your editing.

5 #creativity lessons I learned from my son

(He’s 2 and a half years old, by the way)

👉 Perfection is overrated.

↳ Do what works for you. Just make it meaningful.

👉 Order is good. Structure is good. Neither is vital.

↳ Set your own rules. Then follow them.

👉 Have fun by any means necessary.

↳ Do what you love. You’ll always love what you do.

👉 Giving up is always an option.

↳ Why force things? Stop. Pivot. Have fun (again).

👉 Don’t focus on popular. Focus on what works for you.

↳ Which brings us back to our 1st point.

It’s amazing what a little play time can do for your mind.

(Just so we’re clear, I’m talking about me - not him)

Stay creative, friends! ✌️

July 27, 2022

Stop me if you’ve heard brands say this:

“We do things differently here” 😐😐😐

Here’s what you’re “actually saying”:

👉 “Everyone else does things the same.”
Reality: Everyone does things a little differently.

👉 “Brands in our niche are a carbon copy of each other.”
Reality: Brands in any niche are similar. But not the same.

👉 “We have our own way of doing things.”
Reality: Everyone has their own way of doing things.

So, how do you battle this “vagueness”?

Simply answer one (or all) of these questions:

✅ Why are you different from competitors? Show, don’t tell.
✅ What’s the “best” part of working with you vs. others?
✅ Do you have a unique offer - that others don’t?

Use the answers to these questions in your brand messaging. This is how you show you (actually) “do things differently”.

Otherwise…

It's a lot of words that don't mean anything.

Every copywriter has a pet peeve.

Something they don’t write about.

Or can’t. Or won’t.

👇 Here’s my list (and reasons why):

🦠 Skincare (it’s all “the same”)
🛍 Fashion (can’t do the whole “style talk”)
💍 Jewelry (same as above)
🕹 Gaming (never was a gamer, sorry)
🎲 Gambling (hate even the thought of it)
👩‍❤️‍👨 Dating (tried it once, didn’t work out)
🍸 Alcohol (don’t consume, don’t care)
🧪 CBD/marijuana (same as above)

Even if you’re not a #copywriter, there are always topics or niches you avoid.

And it's okay.

July 17, 2022

🔥 Hot take: #Copywriting is… not writing.

→ It is communication.
→ Mostly persuasion.
→ Mainly ideation.
→ Even design.

But… not writing.

July 12, 2022

Here are 3 of the biggest lessons I learned as a #copywriter for Fortune 500 clients:

(You might be surprised by some of them)

1️⃣ Your ideas matter more than your words

Most Creative Directors are hella good writers too.
Your job is to point them in a new/the right direction.
If your ideas can serve as copy too, even better.

2️⃣ Clarity always comes 1st, creativity 2nd

Most super-creative ideas you have won’t fly.
It’s all about educating and enticing customers.
If the copy is “unclear”, the point above falls apart.

3️⃣ You have to be great at “pitching your ideas”

“Please see attached the final draft” is a no-go.
Sometimes, copy itself isn’t enough to see the full picture.
Explain the vision behind your ideas as you deliver them.

It took me (literal) years to master these 3 lessons.

So I hope this post can save you some time. 👊

Good luck, copy buffs!

July 9, 2022

First website I ever wrote - I had no idea what I was doing. I was just looking at other “good” websites.

Turns out that’s what all the greats do too!

👉 Researching the market.
👉 Seeing (and understanding) what works.
👉 Getting inspired vs. flat out copying.

So over the years I’ve developed what I call…

My ideal website copywriting checklist:

1️⃣ Say what you do in CLEAR language
2️⃣ Say why it matters to the TARGET audience
3️⃣ What’s the PRIMARY offer (put just 1 in focus)
4️⃣ Provide social proof > logos or reviews
5️⃣ Provide a CLEAR and EASY call to action

Once I have provided all this information…

Then it’s all about layout and design.

I might edit or rephrase a thing or two.

✅ Basically EVERY single website I create is created with this checklist - ZERO exceptions.

👉 It makes my process seamless.
👉 Makes the writing easier.
👉 Makes the end product better (and clearer).

Hope it helps!

EXAGGERATION = Underrated messaging technique

Some of the best ad campaigns use exaggeration to deliver their message. There are 3 good reasons why:

1️⃣ Grabbing attention
2️⃣ Standing out in a sea of ads
3️⃣ Delivering a “memorable” message

Does it work for every brand?

No.

But are there different ways to go about it?

Yes.

Here are 3 ways to use exaggeration in your ads:

1️⃣ Write a statement that is “taboo” otherwise
Ex. “Green and salty. Just like my nuts.”

2️⃣ State your UVP + add a provocative image
Ex. “No one goes lower than us” + panties sliding

3️⃣ Imagery that is thought-provoking at its best
Ex. “Sugar-free” lollipops in real life

Don’t be afraid to exaggerate.

Humans love it. 🤷‍♂️
